About Steam Turbines

A steam turbine is a thermal turbomachine that converts the thermal energy of a fluid with high pressure and temperature into mechanical energy. Water vapor is used as the working fluid in steam turbines. The thermal energy obtained is then used to perform mechanical tasks on a rotating shaft. Turbines are essentially a type of heat engine and can be used for everything from heating and mechanical work in pumps and compressors to electricity generation. For example, back-pressure turbines are commonly used for process steam applications or processes that require steam for heat and moisture rather than power. Refineries and industrial facilities make extensive use of back-pressure turbines.

Steam Turbines

Since turbines generally use "superheated steam" (steam that is hotter than its evaporation or boiling point at the absolute pressure at which the temperature is measured), safety is a major reason for insulating turbines, as serious burns can occur if workers come into contact with an exposed turbine. Turbines operating with steam pressures of 600 psig often have surface temperatures around 450°C. This is unsafe, especially considering that 600 psig steam is generally expected to be around 253°C.

Cost and energy are also important factors. Regardless of the size of a single turbine, leaving it exposed can result in significant wasted energy and high costs. In addition, large temperature differences can cause cracking in the turbine body. Small 5 MW turbines can have approximately 50 square meters of heated surface area; at a surface temperature of 450°C, this can result in more than 180,000 BTU of heat loss per hour and over 1,500 MMBTU of wasted energy per year. Roughly speaking, a single turbine can cost a facility more than $12,500 per year in wasted energy in our country.

Naturally, rigid insulation is impractical for turbines. Traditional plaster insulation and insulation systems made by building walls or packing insulation materials inside cages can cause major problems because these devices have irregular shapes and require access for maintenance. Therefore, pillow-style insulation is the preferred method for turbine insulation today.

İzoval Turbine Insulation Jackets

Steam turbine insulation jackets improve both safety and efficiency at the facility.

  • Proper Fit: We manufacture insulation covers that provide a precise fit for many specific turbine types. Our standard turbine jackets are generally 75 mm thick and are designed with a 50 mm first layer of ceramic wool insulation and a 25 mm second layer inside the jacket. Our expert technicians and engineers can also design insulation jackets that meet exact specifications for custom applications. Dimensions, shape, material selection, and thickness can be tailored to your requirements.
  • Convenient: Our insulation jackets are designed to be easily and quickly removed and replaced by any member of the staff. Removable jackets use a simple fastening system consisting of Velcro and D-rings, together with buckles used to connect the jacket to adjacent insulation. To prevent sagging caused by high vibration during turbine operation, İzoval uses specially developed support straps.
  • Cost-Effective: Turbine jackets can reduce energy consumption to 135 BTU per square meter per hour and lower the component's surface temperature from a scorching 450°C to 60°C. Consider how much this can save while reducing workplace safety hazards. İzoval will provide you with the turbine jackets best suited to your needs and equipment.
  • High Quality: Our turbine jackets are carefully designed and manufactured to remain effective for long periods under demanding conditions. As with all İzoval Jackets, we stand behind our turbine insulation with a 2-year warranty covering materials and workmanship.
